Hamburg Airport and ENERCON to build Windpark at Heidmoor for Net Zero 2035 campaign

Date

On 30 June 2025, Hamburg Airport and ENERCON reached an important milestone for the ‘Net Zero 2035’ climate strategy: the signing of the purchase and maintenance contract for six wind turbines marks the start of construction of the Heidmoor wind farm near Kaltenkirchen. The turbines are being built on an airport site in Schleswig-Holstein and are an important step towards making airport operations completely CO₂-free by 2035.

"The construction of the wind farm in Heidmoor brings us significantly closer to our ambitious goal of being the first major airport in Germany to reduce its own CO2 emissions to zero by 2035. The Heidmoor wind farm is one of the airport's biggest investment decisions in recent years and also marks our entry into a new business segment. Most importantly, however, the wind farm makes us independent and more resilient in our energy supply," says Christian Kunsch, CEO of Hamburg Airport.

Approval for the wind farm has already been applied for and commissioning is planned for early 2028. The six E-175 EP5 E1 wind turbines each have an output of six megawatts and will cover the airport's entire energy requirements. With a total investment of around 70 million euros, the project is one of the airport's largest investments and will make it more independent and resilient in terms of energy supply.

The partnership with ENERCON was concluded as part of a Europe-wide tendering process. In addition to the wind farm, the airport is investing a total of 250 million euros in sustainable solutions as part of Net Zero 2035, including alternative drive systems in the vehicle fleet and the switch to district heating. With the Heidmoor wind farm, Hamburg Airport is setting another milestone on the way to becoming Germany's first CO₂-free major airport.
