Problem definition

In future, drones will be integrated into the existing airspace framework via so-called U-Spaces. However, safe U-space implementation in Germany requires reliable clarification and solutions to be found in advance with numerous U-Space stakeholders. For example, collision-free priority must be ensured for rescue service aircraft with the involvement of relevant rescue control centres. In addition, special data-related features in U-Space must be taken into account in control zones around airports. Data exchange and communication protocols must also be established between different coordination centres (U-Space Service Provider, USSP). Finally, practical U-Space identification procedures with defined roles are required.

Project objective

For the development of a future air traffic management system under real conditions, air traffic data will be linked with data from different sources and platforms for the first time. The project will develop various cross-interface blueprints with the broad involvement of the drone economy. Administrations will be enabled to initiate U-Space designation procedures. BLU-Space will thus make an essential contribution to safe and economical air mobility in Germany.

Realisation

In view of the high complexity of planning and implementation, based on a basic technical, organisational and procedural concept of U-Spaces, a test airspace will be set up in Hamburg. Field tests will be carried out in this airspace along the system development phases with the participation of numerous operators. Conceptual work is focussed on BOS deployment coordination and designation scenarios for U-Space airspaces. A project advisory board accompanies the project.
