GATE III: Funding for Sustainable Aviation Innovations in Hamburg
With the third call of the GATE (Green Aviation Technologies) funding programme, Hamburg is once again strengthening the development of sustainable technologies in aviation. The programme, offered by the Hamburgische Investitions- und Förderbank (IFB Hamburg), particularly supports small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) as well as research institutions in developing innovative solutions for a more climate-friendly and resource-efficient aviation industry.
GATE is a key instrument for actively driving the transformation of the sector and ensuring the long-term competitiveness of the Hamburg aviation cluster.
What is funded?
The programme focuses on research and development projects across the entire aviation value chain. It is closely aligned with European strategies such as the Clean Aviation initiative and addresses the following key areas:
- Sustainable aircraft systems and manufacturing processes
Development of more efficient and resource-saving technologies in production and system design - Lightweight, modular and integrated aircraft cabins
Innovative cabin concepts to reduce weight and improve functionality - Sustainable aircraft operations
Solutions for maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), services, and digital processes to increase efficiency - Sustainable airport operations
Technologies and processes for reducing emissions in ground operations and infrastructure - Hydrogen technologies
Expansion of research infrastructures for the use of hydrogen in aviation, particularly for short- and medium-haul aircraft
Your benefits at a glance
Participation in GATE III offers companies and research institutions a wide range of opportunities. Applicants benefit from attractive funding rates, with grants of up to €500,000 for individual projects and up to €2 million for collaborative projects with partners based in Hamburg. At the same time, the programme specifically strengthens innovation capacity by supporting the development of new technologies with direct relevance to future aviation programmes. In addition, GATE III enables early positioning in future markets, for example by preparing participants for next-generation aircraft and sustainable propulsion systems. Finally, the programme provides access to a strong network within Hamburg’s aviation cluster, creating ideal conditions for collaboration and joint innovation projects.
