More than half a billion euros in gross value added and over 11,000 jobs secure Hamburg Airport and the companies operating directly at the airport in the metropolitan region. Despite the challenges during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, Hamburg Airport remains a key driver of the Hamburg economy. Every job at the airport secures two jobs in the region. This is the result of a recent study by the Hamburg Institute of International Economics (HWWI), which was published today. The study, commissioned by Hamburg Airport, also shows how important the airport is as a location factor for tourism and industry.
Airport location creates gross value added of over €662m
In 2023, the airport company generated direct added value of 207.6 million euros and, together with the indirect (through economic links) and induced (consumption triggered by this) effects, secured an additional 194.6 million euros in the region. The concessionaires (i.e. all external companies, partners and tenants at the airport) contributed to the regional economy with a direct added value of 114.1 million euros and further indirect effects of 146 million euros. If everything is added up, the gross value added for the region amounts to 662.3 million euros per year. Gross value added is the pure added value that is created after deducting the costs incurred.
Every euro of added value generated directly at the airport is linked to a total of 1.9 euros of added value in the region. The concessionaires achieve an even better figure in terms of value added: every euro invested there leads to 2.3 euros of value added in the metropolitan region.
Hamburg Airport secures over 11,000 jobs in the greater Hamburg area
In the 2023 academic year, Hamburg Airport employed 1,742 people directly and secured a further 1,733 jobs in the region through economic ties. The concessionaires employed 4,507 people directly during this period and also secured an additional 3,686 jobs in the Hamburg metropolitan region. This figure does not include the employees of Lufthansa Technik, even though the airport is an important part of the infrastructure of its direct neighbour. Every job at the airport secures two jobs in the region, every job in catering, retail, security companies, etc. at the airport leads to an average of 1.8 jobs in the greater Hamburg area.
1.6 million passengers spend €436 million annually in Hamburg
Around 1.6 million passengers with a destination in the region generated revenue of 436 million euros in 2023, benefiting the hotel, catering, retail and transport sectors in particular. The study also emphasises the importance of the airport for tourism and as a location factor for international companies and events in Hamburg. With its excellent international connections, the airport makes a significant contribution to the attractiveness of the metropolitan region and thus creates long-term economic prospects.
Christian Kunsch, CEO of Hamburg Airport: ‘The results of the HWWI study once again emphasise the central role of Hamburg Airport as the economic engine of our region. Our airport remains a reliable guarantor of growth and employment - not only for us directly, but also for numerous partner companies and industries in Hamburg.’
Prof Dr Michael Berlemann, Scientific Director at the Hamburg Institute of International Economics (HWWI): ‘Hamburg Airport is much more than a transport hub - it is a key resource for the regional economy. The multiplier effects emphasise the considerable networking of the airport's economic activities with other sectors within the Hamburg metropolitan region.’
