On July 23, 2025, around 140 representatives from industry, science, politics and administration accepted Hamburg Aviation's invitation to the Hamburg Aviation Summit: Ready for Tomorrow. In the inspiring setting of Bucerius Law School, the central findings of the new study "Aviation in Hamburg 2025" were presented – followed by a lively discussion on how Hamburg can secure and expand its leading global position in the aviation industry in the long term.
Spotlight on Skills and Education
One of the event's core topics was the growing demand for skilled workers in the aviation industry. The study's findings clearly show that many companies are concerned about a worsening skills shortage. During the panel discussion, it became clear that small and medium-sized companies in particular already find it difficult to recruit qualified mechatronics technicians and industrial electricians. At the same time, soft skills, digital literacy, and a solid understanding of sustainability are becoming increasingly important. The panel emphasized the crucial role of vocational education, especially dual study programs and technical schools, in ensuring a sustainable talent pipeline for the sector. But the challenge goes beyond training: the lack of affordable housing, especially for young people, students and apprentices, was identified as a serious issue for the region's attractiveness.
AI & Digitalization: Enabling People, Not Replacing Them
Another key focus was the use of artificial intelligence and digitalization. Participants agreed: companies want to use IT and AI to increase efficiency and safety – not to replace employees. The goal is to future-proof workplaces and relieve employees of repetitive tasks, such as through automated documentation, intelligent quality assurance, or data analysis. However, the panel discussion also highlighted significant differences within workforces regarding their experience with AI and their willingness to adopt new digital tools. Improving digital skills and promoting an innovation-friendly environment were seen as essential to ensuring Hamburg's continued leadership in aviation.
Shared Ambition: Expanding Hamburg's Leading Role
The summit made one thing clear: Hamburg has the right ingredients for success – strong networks, a high density of aerospace companies, scientific excellence, and political commitment. To build on these strengths, joint efforts are needed:
- Attract and retain skilled professionals
- Strengthen and systematically support innovation capacity
- Actively shape the transformation towards sustainability
Lutz Birke, Head of the Department for Ports and Innovation at the City of Hamburg, emphasized in his welcome address the aviation industry's importance for the region's innovation ecosystem.
