Hamburg Airport reports positive figures for the holiday season in 2024: over 2 million passengers used Hamburg Airport in the past six weeks to fly on holiday or to meet relatives, friends or business partners abroad - an increase of 4 percent compared to the previous year. The peak day was 22 July with over 55,000 travellers. Thanks to detailed planning in cooperation with the Federal Police Service, airlines and service providers, Hamburg's airport team successfully prepared for all traffic peaks, with no major disruptions reported.
With over 2 million passengers arriving and departing and more than 14,200 aircraft movements, Hamburg Airport was even busier during the 2024 summer holidays than in the previous year. Although the number of aircraft movements increased by 1.5 per cent (less than the increase in passengers), the aircraft were particularly full this year: the average load factor increased further to around 87 per cent after the high figure of 84 per cent in the previous year. For all partners at the airport, this means that more passengers are being looked after at the same time per flight - whether at the security checkpoint, during baggage transport or when boarding the aircraft.
‘We experienced almost constant high levels of activity in the terminals during these holidays, but at the same time everything ran smoothly. Our entire team is pleased that the careful preparations paid off. Most passengers took less than 15 minutes to go through security, while our technical services such as Slot & Fly and the baggage machines were also very popular. On peak days, every third suitcase was checked in by the passengers themselves - thanks to the simple new hand scanners, this was even quicker and more convenient,’ says Katja Bromm, Head of Communications at Hamburg Airport. ‘However, the end of the holidays does not necessarily mean that the terminals become quieter: September and October have developed into strong travel months at Hamburg Airport, with consistently high capacity utilisation. Business travel also picks up again after the holidays.’
