1.5-degree target, climate neutrality, and sustainable processes at all levels: What the world, and thus the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, has set as a goal is a mammoth task. It is far too large and complex for a single economic sector alone. Therefore, for the very first time in Hamburg’s cluster history, seven established and powerful clusters are joining forces to make this goal achievable for all sectors.
It is already clear that many things need to change to meet the political and legal requirements for sustainability. Failure to meet these targets not only harbors the risk of financial penalties but also reputational risks. Innovative solutions and collaborations are not nice-to-have but crucial for the long-term success and resilience of entire industries. For this reason, the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) is funding the Hamburg project KLIMAready. Seven successful industry clusters are coming together here:
- Logistics Initiative Hamburg (LIHH)
- Renewable Energies Hamburg (EEHH)
- Hamburg Aviation (HAv)
- Life Science North (LSN)
- Maritime Cluster Northern Germany (MCN)
- foodactive/Hamburg Food Cluster (FoCH)
- Finance City Hamburg (FinCH)
Three years full of goals
The KLIMAready project will run until mid-2027. During this time, the consortium will actively support Hamburg organizations in their energy transformation and in overcoming climate-related challenges. The project will begin with a baseline analysis, including a cross-sector survey. Based on this, ideas for measures will be developed. Agile methods will help address the complexity of the topics. In the development of measures, fields of action will be identified, relevant actors will be networked, and ideas will be methodically developed and evaluated. The findings of this process will be processed and made sustainably usable. The implementation of the most promising ideas will always alternate with idea development, so that learnings can flow directly into the next project phase. Throughout the project duration, continuous communication and public relations will ensure attention to the project content. This will enable interested stakeholders from Hamburg’s cluster landscape, business, science, politics, and society to be part of KLIMAready.
Communicating regulations and framework conditions transparently
In addition to this interplay of needs assessment, measure development, and implementation, the systematic processing and provision of information on regulations and framework conditions is planned. This also includes an overview of possible funding as a transparent basis for decisions in measure development.

We look forward to developing cross-industry solutions and offers together with six other cluster networks, from which the entire Hamburg economy will benefit,” says Ralf Gust, Managing Director of Hamburg Aviation.
In addition to the project content that directly addresses Hamburg organizations, another core aspect of the project is the sustainable development and securing of competencies within the clusters regarding climate neutrality and new agile methods for initiating and managing extensive projects.
