H2-Finity: Hamburg's hydrogen-powered drone takes to the skies

Successful maiden flight of the H2-Finity: a milestone in hydrogen technology

On 8 November 2024, the time had finally come: after more than two years of intensive research, the H2-Finity, an innovative hydrogen-powered drone, successfully took off on its maiden flight in Rothenburg. This event marks significant progress in the development of sustainable propulsion technologies.

A breakthrough in propulsion technology

The H2-Finity uses gaseous hydrogen, which is converted into electrical energy in a specially developed fuel cell. This energy drives an electric motor that lifts the drone into the air. The scalable drivetrain of the H2-Finity enables flexible adaptation to different application scenarios and thus offers high efficiency and versatility. In the future, this technology could be used not only in drones but also in other aircraft.

Collaboration and support

This project would not have been possible without the close co-operation and support of numerous partners. Hamburg Aviation members TECCON Consulting and Engineering GmbH, mb+Partner, Thelsys and the ZAL Centre of Applied Aeronautical Research have worked together on the development and implementation of the H2-Finity. In recent months, numerous preliminary tests and inspections of the individual components have been carried out to ensure that all systems function perfectly. The project was funded by the Hamburgische Investitions- und Förderbank (IFB Hamburg) as part of the GATE I programme.

Challenges and Results

The installation of the drive components in the drone presented the team with numerous challenges. Aspects such as flight physics, cooling, electronics and functionality had to be carefully considered and optimised. These intensive preparations not only led to the successful first flight, but also provided valuable insights for future projects.

With the successful maiden flight of the H2-Finity, an important milestone has been reached. The team is now ready to enter the next phase of the project and carry out further tests. These will help to further refine the technology and expand its potential applications. Hamburg Aviation is proud to support this pioneering project. H2-Finity is an impressive example of how innovation and collaboration can lead to sustainable solutions.
