In a festive atmosphere on November 20, 2024, this year's winners of the “Hamburg. Airport. Moves. Neighborhood Award” were celebrated. Around 140 guests gathered to honor the diversity and outstanding commitment of the community projects from the region. This year, the prize was awarded to nine outstanding initiatives, which received prize money totaling €13,500. Hamburg's Senator for Economy and Innovation, Melanie Leonhard, once again acted as patron and congratulated the winners personally.
Once again this year, the winning projects and initiatives come from very different parts of the Hamburg metropolitan region. For example, initiatives and associations from Harburg, Eimsbüttel, Billstedt, Altona and Hasloh in Schleswig-Holstein made it onto the winners' podium. Three prizes were awarded in each category: 2,000 euros each for first place, 1,500 euros each for second place and 1,000 euros each for third place.
Christian Kunsch, CEO of Hamburg Airport, says: “For our airport, which has been firmly rooted in the region for over 113 years, the neighborhood is of great importance. We are part of this region. It is impressive to see how diverse and creative the people here are in their voluntary work.” Berit Schmitz, Managing Director at Hamburg Airport since April, adds: “It is also a great pleasure for me to be part of a tradition that recognizes people and their tireless efforts for a good cause. It was really difficult for the jury to select the winning projects; all 76 projects represent great ideas that make our society better. My message to all participants is: Your commitment makes a real difference! It's inspiring to see how much heart and soul goes into these projects and how they positively influence our neighborhoods.”
Prominent patron: Senator for Economy and Innovation Melanie Leonhard supports the Neighbourhood Award
Senator Leonhard: “With the Neighbourhood Award, Hamburg Airport makes it possible to put the spotlight on voluntary work year after year. These include large and small projects - all of which are special because they have a direct impact right next door. Hamburg residents are committed to helping people in their neighborhoods: This award celebrates not only the nine winning projects, but everyone who is working for the good of our community.”
Gerhard Schroeder, Managing Director of AviAlliance, emphasizes: “The diversity and quality of the projects submitted impressively show how lively and committed our community is. As a sponsor of the Culture & Sport category, we are particularly pleased to be able to make a contribution to promoting these important areas. The winning projects prove that sport and culture are key drivers of integration, inclusion and social cohesion.”
