GATE III launched: Funding programme for sustainable aviation innovations in Hamburg

Date

With the third call for applications under the GATE (Green Aviation Technologies) funding scheme, Hamburg is sending a strong signal in support of the sustainable transformation of the aviation industry. The programme, launched by the Hamburg Investment and Development Bank (IFB Hamburg), is aimed in particular at small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and research institutions working on innovative solutions for resource-efficient and environmentally friendly aviation.

The aim of GATE III is to systematically expand technological expertise in Hamburg as an aviation hub whilst making a concrete contribution to a more climate-friendly industry. The focus is on combining environmental responsibility with technological innovation – particularly through digital solutions, the use of artificial intelligence and automated processes.

Focus on future technologies across the entire value chain

The funding programme covers a wide range of topics that are crucial to the future of aviation. The following areas are eligible for funding:

  • Sustainable aircraft systems and manufacturing processes
  • ️Lightweight, modular and integrated aircraft cabin
  • Sustainable aircraft operations – maintenance, repair and services
  • ️Sustainable airport operations
  • Expansion of hydrogen research infrastructure for short- and medium-haul aircraft

The content of the funding programme is closely aligned with the European research agenda, in particular with the objectives of the Clean Aviation Initiative. At the same time, GATE helps to prepare Hamburg-based stakeholders at an early stage for future programmes and to secure their long-term competitiveness.

Attractive funding terms for businesses and consortiums

GATE III offers attractive financial incentives for innovation projects: individual projects can receive funding of up to €500,000, whilst collaborative projects involving partners from Hamburg can receive grants of up to €2 million. A total funding pot of around €3 million is available.

Funding is available for research and development projects in civil aviation that make a clear contribution to sustainability, efficiency and technological advancement. Particular focus is placed on SMEs, which can use this funding to strengthen their innovative capacity and strategically position themselves to meet future market demands.

Shaping sustainable aviation together

With GATE III, Hamburg is once again creating an important platform to specifically promote innovation and strengthen collaboration within the aviation cluster. The funding scheme supports companies in developing forward-looking technologies whilst actively contributing to the decarbonisation of aviation.

Interested companies are invited to make use of the information and networking opportunities on offer and to contribute their ideas. Because one thing is clear: the sustainable transformation of aviation can only succeed through collaboration – through strong partnerships, innovative approaches and targeted funding.
