German Aerospace Center Facilities in Hamburg
Hamburg is one of the world’s leading research centres for civil aviation. Foundational for Hamburg’s R&D landscape is the German Aerospace Center, Germany’s national aerospace research and development agency. Four of its institutes and departments are at home in Hamburg, contributing substantially to aviation R&D expertise in the region.
Institute of Air Transport
The Institute of Air Transport researches the complex interrelationships of air transport and its subsystems with a focus on the development of scenarios, the economic analysis of the air transport system, business management analysis and the modelling and simulation of flight and fleet operations from the perspective of the air transport industry.

Institute of Maintenance and Modification
The Institute of Maintenance and Modification, which is based at ZAL, researches the optimisation and (partial) automation of maintenance processes, innovative diagnostic, maintenance and modification technologies and their modular linking at the Hamburg-Finkenwerder site.
Institute for System Architectures in Aeronautics
Here, experts research the entire aviation system with all its parameters and dependencies. The goal: aviation urgently needs to become climate-friendly and at the same time economical in order to provide society with sustainable mobility.

Institute of Aerospace Medicine
The Department of Aerospace Psychology, based in Hamburg, focuses on the development, validation and implementation of comprehensive selection systems for aviation professions. Research in the areas of performance under (simulated) weightlessness, cockpit design, flight operations of aircraft and drones, virtual reality and passenger comfort in trains and aeroplanes extends the department's research spectrum.
