In a virtual departure gate, users are informed about new and existing destinations as well as the respective airlines. Hamburg Airport has developed its own virtual reality app for the airport in cooperation with the Bremen-based start-up VistoVR.

Photos, 360 degree footage and videos from different destinations, e.g. from New York, Marrakech or the Algarve, inspire users for their next vacation trip. The app is now available for free in the app stores for iOS and Android.

"Hamburg Airport is playing a pioneering role among airports with the virtual reality app," says Dr. med. Jörgen Kearsley, Head of Aviation Marketing at Hamburg Airport. "Our guests can find information about destinations in the virtual boarding gate in a new, exciting way and ideas for their next holiday. The app’s contents are updated and renewed regularly so the user always has something to discover as well as new holiday destinations."

"The virtual reality boarding gate underlines Hamburg Airport’s position towards digital communication. The virtual reality technologies will faciltiate the flow of far more information in future," says Sebastian Budde, founder of VistoVR. "That makes it attractive not only for the user and gives the company added value and many more opportunities. The collaboration with Hamburg Airport has laid the foundation for more exciting and innovative projects.”

The virtual reality app is an airport pilot project that tests the extent to which virtual reality is suitable for informing passengers about destinations and connections. In addition to the app, Hamburg Airport has developed a website that provides further information on the new application.
