Airbus invites next generation of talent to make their innovative ideas fly

Student competition focuses on digital solutions for aerospace -Airbus has launched the sixth Fly Your Ideas competition and invites the next generation of innovators to propose and develop original ideas for the aerospace industry. The biennial competition is a celebration of creativity and innovation to solve real industry challenges.

Open to university teams from across the world, including all disciplines from engineering and information technology to marketing and design, the competition is an opportunity for students to unleash their pioneering spirit, working at the cutting edge of digital technology alongside industry experts. Airbus is seeking ideas that could change aerospace in the decades to come and create a safer, cleaner and better-connected world. Since the competition launched in 2008, over 20,000 students from more than 650 universities in over 100 countries have been involved, with this edition expected to be the most exciting yet.

Teams entering Fly Your Ideas go through three competition rounds, with progression to each round presenting an opportunity to further develop their concepts with support from Airbus specialists and mentors. As well as joining Airbus on site to further develop their ideas, up to six finalist teams will compete to share a prize fund of € 45,000 and the chance to take their idea forward within the industry.

The 2019 competition asks teams to respond to one of the following challenges: Electrification; Data Services; Cyber Security; Internet of Things; Artificial Intelligence; and Mixed Reality. Since 2012, the competition has been supported by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The live final of Fly Your Ideas will be held in 2019, where students will have the opportunity to showcase their ideas to an audience of industry experts. Airbus BizLab expands its global network with new Spanish campus  

Airbus has expanded its global network of BizLabs by opening a fourth campus in Madrid (Spain) after Toulouse (France), Hamburg (Germany) and Bangalore (India). This milestone is part of Airbus' strategy to establish a global network of aerospace business accelerators.

Madrid concentrates all Airbus businesses (Defence & Space, Airbus Helicopters, and Commercial Aircraft) and represents a strategic bridge between Europe and Latin America, a flourishing ecosystem for start-ups. Pedro Luzon who currently is Business Performance Improver at Airbus Operations in Spain will be the Head of BizLab in Madrid.

In parallel, Airbus has launched its new call for projects worldwide with applications open until June 24th. Airbus BizLab is looking for projects that include developments of an existing product, a service or an application related to the aerospace industry and beyond. Examples include: Data analytics and Artificial Intelligence, Digital Design and Manufacturing, Autonomy and Robotics, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle & Urban Air Mobility, Electrification & Connectivity, Virtual and Augmented Reality, New Space solutions and SmartCity as well as Blockchain and Cybersecurity.

BizLab is also challenging start-ups to propose innovative concepts and technical solutions to the sustainable development goals (United Nation Sustainable Development Goals).

Pre-selected projects will be invited to a two-day final selection workshop with Airbus experts and Top Management in the four campuses from the end of August 2018. The selected projects will kick off the Airbus BizLab fourth Season in October 2018.

The Airbus BizLab welcomes applications for acceleration programmes from entrepreneurs, start-up businesses and Airbus employees. To date, the BizLab accelerated 50 startups and 40 internal projects and more than 1,000 start-ups have interacted with the business accelerator.

Early-stage projects are offered wide-ranging support, in the form of a six-month "acceleration programme". Through these programmes, Airbus BizLab gives access to a large number of coaches, experts and mentors in various domains: technology, legal, finance, marketing & communication; easing prototyping and access to market.

Wizz Air takes delivery of its 100th A320 Family aircraft

Wizz Air (WIZZ), one of the fastest growing airlines in Europe and the leading low-cost carrier in Central and Eastern Europe, has taken delivery of its 100th A320 Family aircraft, an A321ceo, at an event in Budapest Airport.

The event was attended by Mr. Levente Magyar, Hungary's Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. József Váradi, WIZZ's Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Andreas Kramer, Airbus Vice President Sales Eastern Europe and Central Asia, as well as Mrs. Jessica Villardi, Pratt & Whitney Regional Vice President, Europe, Russia & CIS.

The aircraft carrying a special livery to mark the occasion is powered by IAE engines and configured with 230 seats. It is also equipped with "Smart Lavs", an optimised lavatory design providing more cabin length for more seats and improved seat recline for more comfort.

The aircraft will be deployed on WIZZ's extensive regional and international network covering 141 destinations across 44 countries in Europe and beyond. WIZZ will take delivery of 268 additional A320 family aircraft over the coming years. 

 

 

Lufthansa Group firms up order for six more A320neo and three A320ceo

Lufthansa Group has firmed-up a previous option for six further Airbus A320neo, following a decision by the company's supervisory board at the beginning of May.

The latest agreement brings Lufthansa Group's total order for the A320neo to 122 (77 A320neo and 45 A321neo). In addition, the airline signed an order for three more A320ceo, bringing the Group's A320ceo orders to 273. With a total of 395 A320 Family aircraft on order, the Lufthansa Group is also Airbus' biggest A320 operator with nearly 400 A320 Family aircraft in service. Lufthansa was the launch operator of the A320neo.

The A320neo Family incorporates the very latest technologies including new generation engines and Sharklets, which together deliver at least 15 percent fuel savings at delivery and 20 percent by 2020. With more than 6,000 orders received from 100 customers since its launch in 2010, the A320neo Family has captured some 60 percent share of the market.
