“Rapid repair” – high tech repairs for high performance fibre-reinforced composites

Partners are jointly developing an integrated process chain for the fast, automatable and reproducible repair of high performance fibre-reinforced composites. The focus is on the repair of fuselage panels in monolithic and sandwich structures.

This joint project was established to develop an integrated process chain for the fast, automatable and reproducible repair of high performance fibre-reinforced composites. The focus of the research and development work is on the repair of fuselage panels in monolithic and sandwich structures.

 

The first stage in the automated repair of modern aircraft types involves the scanning and measuring of the damaged surface of an affected component by means of structured light projection. Software especially developed for the process facilitates tailored mounting contours for the point of damage and calculates the milling paths for the milling robot. For quality assurance purposes, the component is re-scanned after milling, allowing the data from the mounting and the structured light projection to be compared with one another. The data generated for the mounting also serve as a basis for cutting the individual fibre layers using a special cutting machine (ply cutter). Before the final application, glueing and hardening of these layers on the affected component, the adherend is inspected for contamination using a specially developed system. This procedure has allowed Lufthansa Technik to further reduce repair costs.
