In the OPTISTRUCT project, FormTech and its partners are developing optimised join points from titanium and CFRPs. Ti-Bond is building on this by producing and optimising titanium leading edges for engine scoops using diffusion bonding.

Aircraft constructed using lightweight carbon-fibre reinforced polymers (CFRPs) have a latent corrosion problem at the points where aluminum is integrated. Titanium materials can solve this problem. This light metal does not rust and has a rigidity double that of aluminum.

In the “OPTISTRUCT” Leading-Edge Cluster project, the companies FormTech GmbH and Hein & Oetting Feinwerktechnik GmbH are working together with the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht to develop titanium/CFRP join structures.

As part of this, material-saving construction methods and production processes are being developed for integral titanium structures, as titanium is more expensive than aluminum. The production processes being used are diffusion bonding and hot forming, which allow for savings of 80% in this expensive material.  The OPTISTRUCT project is also redesigning the hybrid joint zone, where titanium and CFRPs are joined, in view of commercial viability and performance. Suitable laboratory designs are also being produced.

In the Ti-Bond Leading-Edge Cluster project, FormTech and KE-Technologie, both specialised in diffusion bonding, are taking an application tested in OPTISTRUCT to the next stage: the titanium leading edges of CFRP engine scoops. These leading edges are produced using diffusion bonding. The functionality and durability of the leading edge is now being optimised. Over time, airborne particles result in degradation of the material, the edges become rounded and the aerodynamic efficiency decreases. By embedding an erosion-resistant material in the titanium leading edge using diffusion bonding, the overall functionality can be improved.
