Structural optimization of modern aircraft elastic structures made of composite materials considering multidisciplinary requirements.

The research project AeroStruct is granted by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) as part of LuFo IV from 2012-2015. Within AeroStruct, the use-case ForSWING is managed by the German aerospace center (DLR) and its general objective is the development of a multidisciplinary simulation environment for the analysis and optimization of a forward swept elastic wing with highest aerodynamic performance made of composite materials.

The work packages under responsibility of the HAW Hamburg deal with the multidisciplinary optimization of the forward swept elastic wing based on the so-called "3-Columns-Concept". An essential part of the development work is delivering efficient optimization models, i.e. design and evaluation models. Within the design model, the design parameters (variables) are defined, as well as their influence upon the analysis models used. Likewise, within the evaluation model, the results from the analysis models are evaluated according to the design objectives (objective function and constraints).  The following main tasks are being performed:

  • Development of optimization models considering
    - Anisotropic material behavior (Aeroelastic Tailoring)
    - Local and global buckling phenomena
    - Specific strength failure criteria of composite materials
    - Stiffness requirements (wing bending and torsion)
    - Damage Tolerance  
  • Development of parametric descriptions of thickness distribution of composite materials
  • Development of parametric descriptions of the wing geometry (i.e. rib positions)
  • Implementation of aggregation methods for processing and evaluating large numbers of analysis results
  • Consideration of robustness in the design process
